Arthur W. Kennedy, Sr., USN Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) of Covington, GA, age 82 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 15, 2022. He was born on March 23, 1940, in Vincennes, Indiana to Thomas O. (Pete) Kennedy and Helen W. Roderick Kennedy. He retired honorably from a US Naval Air career after serving 23 years. He took on a second career as a hazardous chemical truck driver/operator working for over 40 years, finally retiring at the age of 80. He enjoyed traveling in his camper, deer hunting with his grandsons, fishing on his pontoon boat with his friends, attending NASCAR races and puttering in his “hangar” restoring his father’s beloved VW Sand Rail and his family’s International Harvester Farm tractor.
Art was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Tommy and a nephew, Eddie McMahan. Also known as Grandfather, Grandpappy, Popeye, Skip, Hacksaw and Chief, he is survived by his faithful partner, Brenda Kennedy; his 4 children: Carolyn Easterly (Glenn); Patty Johnson (Kevin); Skipper Kennedy (Chieko); and April Uryc (Greg); his grandchildren, Tre’, Thomas, Ashley, Julie, Art, Meagan, Tyler, and Jaysen; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley McMahan (Denise Ducharme); niece, Barbie McMahan, as well as his beloved buds, Zoe and Harley.
Always the easy-going guy not wanting to be a bother to others, his visitation will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022, at 6:00 pm followed by a brief service at 7:30 pm, at Wheeler Funeral and Cremation Services, 11405 Brown Bridge Rd, Covington, GA 30016 . Graveside services are Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 11:00 am at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery, 2000 Cobb Parkway S., Marietta, GA 30060. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and sons-in-law while his granddaughters and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
As Art requested, family and friends will appreciate flowers be sent to Wheelers Funeral Services. Following the service, the flowers will be donated to local rest homes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association ( www.heart.org ).
Art’s family has placed their care and trust with In Their Honor of Jasper, 481 Noah Dr., Jasper, GA to receive transport and military honors. During this time, the immediate family will be together and apart in their homes throughout the United States of America.
