James Leroy Yount passed away to be with his Heavenly Father on August 19, 2022, at the age of 82 in North Georgia. His courage with battling serious medical issues in recent years showed his true character which marked an incredible and inspiring life. Despite the pain and difficulties he endured, Leroy was very loved, and was a precious soul to his family and his dearest friends. He remained strong, true to form and sincerely steadfast until the very end.
Leroy was the son of James and Mary Yount who preceded him in death. Leroy grew up with his family in Hickory, NC, where he was an avid outdoorsman, an Eagle Scout and went on to graduate from North Carolina State University. From there his dream of being a world class engineer began. Even after leaving college, he was a Wolfpack Fan through and through – he never missed an opportunity to cheer for the “Pack”. He leaves behind three siblings Louis, Elsie, and Patty.
After graduation he met the love of his life Dale and with her, they traveled the world and raised three highly successful boys - Britton, Chandler, and Ramsey. Living in Egypt, England, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia – Leroy provided his family an education and an adventure that would provide for incredible memories to span multiple generations. From Buckingham Palace, to riding through the valley of the Kings and Queens in Egypt, to skiing in Hokkaido, Japan and Zugspitze, Germany, to touring the DMZ in Korea, to the Louvre in Paris and to the beaches of Normandy, Leroy always loved his family and was always up to exploring God’s beautiful creation.
Leroy’s life and for all those that knew him would agree that he always put others before himself and to the end this was not an exception but a way of life for him, a true gentle man. Leroy never met a stranger and loved everyone larger than life normally allows. Leroy was humble, kind and was an incredible listener. Later in life “Grandad’s” extreme joy was found on the sidelines watching his grandkids playing sports, performing in ballets, and watching them act in various kinds of stage performances. Granddad loved coming up with funny nicknames for his grandchildren, sharing a bowl of ice cream together and sending them text messages to let them know he loved them. Leroy perfected his angling skills in his remaining years and on day trips you could find him wrestling trout out on the lakes in Big Canoe. The family always enjoyed hearing about the one that got away, often this was just to let the grandkids know that there were more fish to be caught on the next big trip. Leroy had several passions like finding time to play sudoku and doing some quality reading in his favorite big chair were just a few. Leroy was a gracious man, we will all miss his loving smile and gentle touch.
In the wake of his passing, he leaves behind his wife, Dale of 56 years, three sons with families Britton and Ashley, Chandler and Alyssa and Ramsey and Kerry with six extremely beautiful and talented grandchildren, Britton Jr, Caroline, Colby, Camden, Cooper, and Charlotte.
Leroy cherished the term friend and if you had Leroy as a friend, it was a lifetime commitment that never saw your faults. Finally, our dad Leroy, although not boastful, he would want you to know he had a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and like Him, he loved everyone unconditionally with grace provided by his Father above.
Based on the family’s request in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Leroy’s memory to Robert Stofel a Christian Ministry at Robertstofel.com – Robbie produces weekly sermons, and he has published multiple Christian reference books.
At this time the family is working through services for Leroy and updates will be shared on this site.
