Larry Dale McLaughlin was born December 17, 1937 in Summerville Pennsylvania. His mother and father were William Dale McLaughlin and Geraldine McLaughlin.
He graduated from high school in Rimersburg, Pennsylvania, and during high school he played every sport he could. He was captain of the basketball team, and the football team at the same time he loved athletics, and he taught his boys to love them the same.
He married Patricia Culbertson in June 1958. They had four boys in quick succession. J.R., Ted, Rob, Tim . Because they were all born so close together, the boys followed in their father’s footsteps and developed their love of sports of every type.
Larry continued to be athletic even after he was married in fact in 1961 he went to open tryouts for the Pittsburgh Pirates and was actually offered a position to play professional baseball. It was stated that the scout, for the Pirates said that he was “the fleet of foot“. Unfortunately, the pay was so low and he had to pay his own traveling expenses, with two children at home and a wife to take care of. He could not afford to accept the opportunity to play professional baseball.
He went on to work for his father at “Mac Coal Company”. He was not given any special privilege being the son of the owner. In fact, he worked as a mechanic on heavy equipment, but he did love working with his father.
Then, one day in 1967 he was offered an opportunity to go to work as a salesman. The funny thing is, he had absolutely no experience as a salesman, but that didn’t matter and it didn’t stop him. He quit his full-time job and went to work selling stock in an insurance company straight commission , even though he had a family to support. His hard work and diligence earned him many awards, and he became very successful at what he was doing. He later moved on to management in the insurance company which ultimately led to a promotion that moved the family to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was the state Director for the insurance company and ultimately had close to 100 agents working for him.
In 1974 Larry got baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and from that point forward he and Pat were extensively involved in the ministry.
The four boys all grew up and either got married or left home at early ages to set up their own families. Pat and Larry moved to Pennsylvania around 1980 and together served in the full-time service with Jehovah’s Witnesses for many many years. Larry served as an elder with Jehovah’s Witnesses for many years.
They served in different locations, and at one point even moved back in with his mother to help take care of her before she passed away. Circumstances brought them back to Indiana after living in Pennsylvania for many years. In 2002 they eventually moved to Georgia following their oldest son, JR where he worked as a manager of a masonry supply company until his full retirement.
Larry and Pat have been incredibly self sacrificing throughout their life always thinking of others, being generous, welcoming, and hospitable to others.
After illness after a long, sustained illness, he eventually succumbed to death on Tuesday, March 26 at about 10 PM.
Larry had a younger brother Fred pass away a few years ago. He survived by two other siblings, Dennis McLaughlin, his brother, and Judy Traistor his sister, his wife, Patricia, his four sons, his seven grandchildren, and his 19 great grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much and enjoyed spending time with every chance he could.
