Louis James Pupo, aka “Lou Phillips”, 71, of Jasper, GA passed away peacefully at his
home on January 12, 2021 after a short 9-month battle with cancer. Born on August 15,
1949 in Newark, NJ, attended Bayonne High School and Jersey City College in NJ, where
he received his Associates Degree. He met the love of his life Nola at the Bahia Mar Resort
in Ft. Lauderdale, and they were married on July 1, 1978 in Ft. Lauderdale, building an
instant family of four without question. He was a man of many talents, and was always
driven for success. His business savvy personality afforded him a long career in sales and
sales management where he displayed his vast entrepreneurial talent, but his first love even
as a child has been his music. His incredible talent never went unnoticed and even caught
the eye of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show with whom he played for a time back in the
70’s. His music captured the attention of young and old alike. His ability to emulate those
such as Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond and Dion was talent beyond words, but what stood
out most was his vast “set list” that included blues, rock, country, pop, easy listening and
classics from the 50’s through today’s current hits, and that is what set him apart from the
rest. Proficient and masterful in all types of guitars from electric and acoustic to bass, as
well as multiple percussion instruments made him a truly multi-faceted musician who lived
to entertain others. Over his lifetime, he traveled for sales and music, and had a lifetime of
experiences that he always loved sharing with others. He left an imprint on people no
matter what age. When he was not playing music, he loved to fish. He enjoyed relaxing
with his pole and tackle box every chance he could, and taught his children as well as his
older grandsons to fish, and sparked a passion for fishing in all of them. He was a man of
strong Italian family tradition and instilled these core values in his children so they would
one day pass them down to their children, and was proud to see his traditions passed on
through the years. He always loved holidays and family gatherings, with Christmas being
his favorite. His parents Philip and Marie (Ciazza) Pupo preceded him in death. His is
survived by wife of 42 years Nola (Cancelli) Pupo of Jasper, GA, his daughter Tonia (Ken)
Carter of Jasper, GA, his son Thomas (Sallie) Pupo of Jefferson, GA, his son Michael
(Debbie) Smith of Ft. Myers, FL, and grandchildren Taylor Norris, Anderson Norris, Pearl
Pupo, Michael Smith, Lucy Pupo and Koda Pupo, as well as numerous cousins. A
memorial service for immediate family only is on February 7, 2021 from 3pm to 7pm at In
Their Honor of Jasper in Jasper, GA and will be officiated by Chaplain Steven Harthorn of
Homestead Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital, which Lou and Nola donated to each Christmas.
