Surrounded by family and friends, Mahria Smith, age 72, of Jasper, Georgia passed away on Friday, May 20th, 2022. She is survived by her loving and spiritual husband of 16 years, Lamar Argroves: Daughter Bronwyn Rumery and husband Scott, of Jasper, GA: Granddaughter Elizabeth Simpson and husband Noah, of Savannah, GA: Grandson Robin Hicks and wife Tori, of Lawrenceville, GA: Cousin Michael Margotta and wife Ellana, of Milan, Italy.

Mahria was a former secretary of the Jasper United Methodist Church and was also an Executive Director of the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce here in Jasper. She was devoted to her community, volunteering with the Lioness Club in which she was awarded Lioness of the Year for 1988/1989, and during her years as a free-lance graphic artist, designed the logo for the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce and Sharp Top Mountain Arts Association.

Mahria was passionate about music, poetry and especially art and could be found spending countless hours in her personal studio creating whimsical fairy houses, painting intricate images on walking sticks, designing unique jewelry, or simply just drawing in her sketch book. Edgar Allen Poe and Dylan Thomas were just a couple of her favorite authors, cherished the artwork of Georgia O’Keefe, treasured classic rock, attending Woodstock in the sixties, and was infatuated with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.

Mahria went above and beyond to help those in need, especially animals, rescuing numerous cats and dogs over the years and was known to carry food in her car for them. She found peace when tending to her various plants and flowers, taking walks with her dog Lindhi, and said on numerous occasions that the reason she loved Jasper so much was that it reminded her of the Catskill mountains. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

A service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the following organizations: Foundation Fighting Blindness, Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, or your local Animal Rescue/Humane’s Society.
